Hi Molli, I don't think we know enough about stuttering in particular or behavior change in general to know what activities will be most effective for what clients. I have a blog post about carryover at a restaraunt, but reading it now just validates how challenging carryover can be. Would any parent really understand how to implement the recommendations in this blog?! I am having trouble imagining how theory becomes practice in this example myself! http://butlerspeechtherapy.blogspot.com/2010/07/carryover-at-restaurant.html In another blog I talked about visiting a mall http://butlerspeechtherapy.blogspot.com/2010/03/speech-therapy-at-mall_30.html This work with a high school senior provided opportuities to purchase food, try on suit jackets at a men's formal clothing store, and even stumble into some spontaneous conversation with another teen in a video game store. He was pretty successful at moving quickly from store to store and engaging in a variety of topics. He was 18 and I was willing to require some conversation with strangers. When one thinks about other locations for carryover work, I think the SLP needs to be cautious about personal boundaries and what is "appropriate" when leaving the speech therapy room. We live a world where the SLP needs to be very careful, so, for example, I never transport a student in my own car anywhere. I do not 'friend' my students on Facebook. In one instance, I have texted brief messages with parents' permission, as a way to simply check-in with a student as a form of support. The New York Times just recently published an article about professionals texting patients that may interest you. While there are probably many ways that SLPs can take carryover into situations beside stores, issues of privacy and appropriateness are serious considerations. Thank you and best of luck with your studies, Judy
