Jill, your article speaks to the importance of desensitization in therapy for stuttering. The question that came to my mind was, "Does observability of the disorder/difference have an influence on the desensitization process?" For example, is is very difficult for a person who stutters (or has a hearing disorder, etc.) to hide the problem; it is visible with almost every attempt at oral communication. The person who is an alcoholic (or gay or other examples in your article), on the other hand, can keep that hidden from normal daily activity. One of the main issues we face in stuttering therapy is the misunderstanding and/or ignorance of the importance of desensitization. There tends to be so much emphasis on "being fluent" rather than "being yourself." Your article is an excellent review and much appreciated.
