Hi Will, Thanks for the suggestion about writing more informally. I will remind myself of this with any (hopefully!) future contributions. Interesting that you felt there may be confusion that “covert stuttering is done by dishonest people who are not true to themselves,” based on this article. The “honesty” that was being referred to seemed to be Ellen being honest with herself and gaining personal freedom. I agree with you, that thinking a person will be better off overtly stuttering is not the case. Every individual has their own story to tell with emotions, relationships and daily living involved. We as professionals are not to prescribe the best way of living with stuttering for an individual. Although, what we are to be aware of is the mental health of an individual. If a person who covertly or overtly stutters and is working through shame, embarrassment, fear, or anxiety then counselling them in this time is priority. There is no right or wrong with speech, I hope I was able to convey that with this message. –Jill
