Hi Jill! I'm just beginning my graduate school experience on my path to becoming an SLP and have had very little exposure to the population of people who stutter--not to even mention those who covertly stutter. Reading your article made me wonder about potential ramifications: 1. If a child covertly stutters, but he/she needs to exhibit a certain amount of disfluencies to qualify for services, how would we as SLPs handle that situation? 2. It seems that perhaps some who covertly stutter could be satisfied with their fluency as interpreted by others; would those individuals still be considered to be "in the closet"? Based on what I read, "the closet" doesn't seem consistent with a happy, content place--rather, an uncomfortable place of hiding. Perhaps some PWCS could have just found a comfortable way to keep their stuttering private that doesn't end up impugning quality of life. What are your thoughts? Again, I loved your article and am grateful that I'm now aware of this population! Thank you!
