Hi Jill! My name is Abby Ausloos and I am experiencing my first semester as a Communicative Disorders graduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. I have not had a Fluency class before and I am just now starting to learn the many different aspects of stuttering and I am very intrigued. The introduction of your paper was fantastic. I personally admire Ellen DeGeneres and appreciated how you related her “coming out” to society as a lesbian as being a similar concept to a person who covertly stutters “coming out” to society. This comparison helped me understand how truly difficult this must be for a person who covertly stutters because a person “in the closet” wants to feel that acceptance with the majority culture and losing that acceptance can be terrifying. Living “in the closet” to me is a negative concept and makes me very sad to think of anyone living this way. I feel we are all human beings on this earth, we are all different, and we all have the freedom to be the person we are.
