Hi Don, Wow! Thanks for sharing your thought process with me. I have just immigrated to New Zealand; I’m right across the ditch from you (as they say). In what part of Australia do you live? Email me with more details, and I can investigate if there are any SLTs in your area that appreciate the holistic/comprehensive approach to stuttering. My contact information is j.douglass@massey.ac.nz You must be going through an amazing eye-opening time in your life when you first pin down a word that best describes yourself “covert.” I can’t imagine the amount of learning you’ve been doing in this past year. Are you feeling less tired? When talking with people who have decided to either come out of the stuttering closet to themselves or others, they feel a huge relief. The tipping point for many seems to be the overwhelming exhaustion that you spoke of. It is unfortunate, that SLTs may reinforce the primary focus of fluency over communication. With that type of prioritization, a person is validated in thinking they are not to say what they want to say when they want to say it, instead they are to say what they want to say in a way that is only fluent. That is stressful. Feel free to contact me at your convenience I look forward to continuing the conversation. Many thanks- Jill
