Sir Richard Branson, a person who has not defined himself as a "stutterer", and Jack Welch, who has talked about his stuttering but has not defined himself as a "stutterer" or PWS (which is another label, have not experienced any exceptional discrimination or even disapproval. I hypothesize the coming out process for a person with an occasional stutter is hard, not only because of possible real prejudice, but because of 1)imagined dire need to be approved by everyone and 2) the unfounded belief that having a stutter makes one somehow less worthwhile of a person. The question I have: "Would it not be better if the therapist challenged these ideas of the client?"
