I was immediately drawn to the title of this article. I am currently in a fluency class, and we have gone into great detail about the difficulty of accepting and advertising one’s disfluency. I think your metaphor is a perfect comparison that explains how challenging it can be for an individual to reveal his or her secret to a society that at times can be very judgmental. I also like how you discussed the lack of visibility of PWSC and its effect on an individual’s comfort level with “coming out.” I think it is wonderful that there are several organizations dedicated to provide support to individuals who stutter. I hope that as more awareness is created in our society, more individuals who stutter covertly will find a comfort level within themselves and with society to “come out” and continue advocating for other individuals who stutter covertly.
