Hi Krista, great questions. My response to your query is based solely on anecdotal evidence among clients, support groups, listserves and friends. This is what I have learned from listening to them. When some begin their journey of saying what they want to say when they want to say it, no matter if a stutter happens… yes, their stuttering increases. In truth, increasing of moments of stuttering due to a person saying what they want to say is success!! Without a doubt thought processes take some time to change. Over time, some may find as they continue to focus on being a good communicator and decrease the emphasis on fluency there is an increase in fluency. This may be true for some. Others may find as they are better communicators their stuttering remains consistent, although the moments of stuttering are significantly less traumatic. Ultimately, it is an individual’s journey and my ultimate goal is that the client feel safe in their own skin. Kind regards, Jill j.douglass@massey.ac.nz
