Hi Elizabeth, thank you for posting your questions. Something I have found useful as a clinician is understanding what counseling is and how to apply counseling skills. One of the best resources I have purchased for myself is the Stuttering Foundation’s DVD with David Luterman “Sharpening Counseling Skills.” Since then I have attended a professional development course of Solution Focused Brief Therapy. I try and jump on any opportunity that arises in regards to counseling. Counseling has been a focus of mine to enhance my appreciation of an individual’s journey. When we see who is in front of us and we listen openly and without an agenda, I think it is then that a person feels appreciated and is present. You mention encouraging a person to come out of the closet as part of therapy for a PWSC. This may not be the ultimate goal for the individual who you are working with. We can’t assume we know what is best for everyone who walks into the therapy room. Kind regards- Jill j.douglass@massey.ac.nz
