I enjoyed this article and analogy and agree that the “coming out of the closet” analogy relates well to people who are covert stutterers, especially when “coming out” to the public. Do you think there is a significant difference with people who stutter and people who are gay “coming out” to their families because of when their difference was observed? Family members can observe that their child stutters at a young age, so they could be somewhat aware and learn to accept their child from the beginning. For people who are gay, this new, shared information may be more difficult for family members to accept because it is completely unexpected.
