Hi Alyssa, thanks for sharing your questions! Covert strategies can begin at a young age, one individual recalls creating a covert strategy at the age of 3 years old. Covert strategies seem to develop over time, with some becoming desensitized and requiring a new one to form. These strategies typically hinder a person from saying what they want to say when they want to say it. I think that when covert stuttering begins to consume an individual’s mental health then there is cause for concern. Some individuals may be content covertly stuttering. Everyone has their own way of thinking, feeling and living. Kind regards, Jill j.douglass@massey.ac.nz
