Hi Gunars, thanks for sharing your thoughts. I first want to mention that “PWS” is another label, yes, and it is different from “stutterer.” By phrasing it is “person first” terms and suggesting that stuttering is one of the features of that person rather than the sole identity and focus of that person’s identity. I just wanted to clarify that. Regarding your question: should a therapist challenge the ideas of the client? I think we should challenge our clients based on the individual. Some clients may be in such a vulnerable state in regards to their identity conflict, social stigma, acceptance, etc. that I would take that into consideration when challenging them. A challenge for some clients may even be saying the word “stutter.” Challenge a client based on where they are and what they are presenting. Kind regards, Jill j.douglass@massey.ac.nz
