Hi Meredith, Thanks for contributing your questions and thoughts. Covert stuttering is a developing field within stuttering. The definition is a working definition. The one I can provide is based on my dissertation research and anecdotal evidence. I have noted that a PWSC is a PWSC when their primary focus is fluency (over communication) and they are not saying what they want to say (for consuming fear of a moment of stuttering); the fear of a moment of stuttering is disproportionate to the audible stutter; their goal is to hide their stuttering from themselves and others. Surely, a PWSC may come out to a friend or SLP, that is one part of the process of coming out another element is to let the stuttering happen. I hope this clears up the topic some more. Understand, this topic is unclear in the field. Kind regards, Jill j.douglass@massey.ac.nz
