Hi Ari, Thank you for your comments. Giving a stutterer tools for fluency (modification/fluency shaping)before he has worked on fears and avoidances, will give him a "fluency fix" that will fail when he has communication pressure. Most stutterers initially want the "fluency fix" and often reject working on fears/avoidances. It is not until they "change" their focus, that they will achieve more consistent fluency and better functional communication. The SSMP program very much stresses initially working on "fears/avoidances/advertising" and it is a Van Riper based program. Next, "holding the moment of stuttering" or "freezing in front of a mirror" is very desensitizing and also lays the ground work for using future speech modification/fluency shaping tools. The stutterer become a student of his stuttering. Hope this helps. J-J-Judith
