Hi Lisa, Thank you for your questions. This idea of "Avoid Avoiding" didn't occur until about the time I turned 50 and was very frustrated with my lack of fluency and good functional communication skills. I knew the Van Riper Modification Tools and even had some Fluency Shaping Therapy but it wouldn't work for me in my everyday life when communication pressure appeared. Dorv Brientfeldt challenged me to begin to work on "my fears/avoidances" when I was a student clinician at the SSMP in the mid 90's and then I returned to the SSMP as a supervisor for 4 additional summers and intensely worked on "fears/avoidances" all year long. That was a real turning point in getting better functional communication with some stuttering. This is why I believe in "Avoid Avoiding" so intensely. J-J-Judith
