Thank you for sharing your insight on this topic! As a graduate student (and a person who doesn't stutter), I've only had the opportunity to take one stuttering course. Although my professor emphasized the importance of working on the cognitive and emotional aspects of stuttering in intervention, we never went into detail about how to incorporate these aspects into therapy. Therefore, the information in your article is extremely helpful for me. I think any negative attitudes and feelings the person who stutter has needs to be addressed before targeting his or her stuttering characteristics. How do you spread the word (besides through the ISAD conferences) to SLPs who only focus on behavior modification to start addressing the cognitive and emotional aspects of stuttering? It seems like many SLPs still focus only on reducing stuttering behaviors or modifying the client's speech.
