Hi Heidi, Working on eye contact is most important in the elimination of avoidance behaviors. If you look at your listener, a PWS can see what is going on and is not momentarily escaping by looking away and having the situation blown out of proportion in his mind. It also gives the impression of being confident enough to speak and struggle and encourages your listener to hang in there with you. If a PWS improves eye contact, then he might go on to work on greater challenges such as making phone calls, ordering food, answering a question in class, etc. Eye contact is a building block for working on avoidance behaviors along with advertising. Please send me an email to jjjudithe@msn.com and I will send you the "Stuttering Survey". This is a great tool for practicing eye contact and advertising to family, friends, and people on the street.
