Hi Dana, Thank for making comments. You are very correct. Initially, a stuttering can modify his speech with fluency techniques and it may hold for a while. However, when he returns to the real world and strong communication pressures re-appear, he may not be able to use his fluency techniques. Out of strong habits, he will revert back to the avoidance behaviors and the downward spiral continues and his old stuttering appears. People can repeat the cycle many times and often feel very guilty and unsuccessful. Working on fears and avoidances is a life long job because stuttering is a cycle disorder. J-J-Judith
