Thank you for the great article Judith! I agree, approaches such as stuttering modification and fluency shaping should not be used unless desensitization is worked on first. An individual needs to be comfortable with his or her stuttering before progressing. But my question is... what about those who get stuck in the phase of being comfortable, with no wishes to continue moving forward.? I am a graduate speech-language pathology student with a school-aged child who stutters. We are working on a combination of fluency shaping and stuttering modification techniques. Yet nothing seems to help, due my clients comfortability with his speech. He plays sports, is involved in school, and has many friends. He largely attends speech therapy due to the continued concerns of his parents.. yet, I feel like we are making very little progress in therapy because he is not the one who wants to be there. It's a sticky situation.
