Victoria, First of let me tell you that it is pretty easy to accept my stuttering since unless I tell people I stutter, they usually don't know. I'm not avoiding, its just that I am normally fluent the vast majority of the time and when I do stutter, it is usually an isolated event that is more interesting than problematic. But... If I think about the characteristics of those that helped me, a few come to the top of the list. 1) they listened, TRULY listened to what I was saying. In fact sometimes they heard what I was really saying, even though I didn't initially realize that is what I was saying. 2) They were encouraging and helped me to see the change that was occurring, even if it was small. 3) They helped point out that I was the one responsible for the change, that is, they had no desire to take credit for change that I was responsible for. 4) They helped lead me to discovery, rather than simply telling me. 5) It was obvious that they really cared about me as a human being. I'm sure I will think of more, but these came to the forefront of my mind. Thank you for your question, for it is interesting for me to see the qualities. All qualities that I need to make sure I am embodying with my own clients. Be well.
