Axelle, I urge all students to find a counseling class during your master's studies. If your department doesn't have one, look outside the department. In addition to this, I would look for Continuing Education opportunities in counseling. David Luterman's book on Counseling for Communication Disorders is a great place to start. As far as when you know you need another professional. I think you will find that you know when you are in "over your head" regarding counseling or some other speech and language matter. Bottom line... speech pathologists work with families, which means you have to listen and counsel. If ASHA asked me, they would require at least on counseling course in order to graduate :)
