I typically work to have all clients in group "treatment" participate. For some, it is a process and just like every other new skill must be broken down. I have had clients reply with short socially appropriate phrases such as "I liked your comment". I find that some need to start with non-verbal engagement and work through a hierarchy of responses. But treatment should be a "safe" place to practice these skills.
