I would work with the "child" on making a list of speaking situations that are important to him/her (I have a list of about 20 situations that I use). Then I would have the student identify one or two strategies to apply in "pretend" situations (i.e. with mom or another family member). I would be careful to not make this a therapy session...i.e. it could be a game, or a short period of practice at home. Like so many aspects of treatment, developing social language is a process and it does take time. This is an area where the slp and the family could plan together...
