Every child/teen with stuttering is unique. I do have students who avoid speaking or get permission to do a speech in private. I accept their feelings/wishes at that moment...but I do spend time exploring how to expand communications. I have developed a powerpoint about Avoidance where I have students define avoidance; explain why it happens; explain some of the consequences of avoiding and provide potential solutions to avoiding...these slides can be shared with other students on my caseload..and each one adds a comment slide. I feel this type of "communication" is effective especially when forming a group is difficult.
