I am an avid golfer and I stuttered severely for 25 years. David Burns, MD list of 10 cognitive distortions plays into your analogy. A bad shot/hole can lead to catastrophic thinking, black/white thinking, personalization, and others. PWS deal with those cognitive distortions also. As children improve their fluency controls they are tested with so many situations: public speaking, carpool, cafeteria, excited speech, emotional speech, etc. If you just consider short game, you see perhaps 25 different chip shots, lobs, sand positions, fringe, breaks in green, etc. I tell parents it takes time to gain control with so many variables and demands to children's speech.
