Yes, I do think it is important that one be aware of their stuttering behaviors, and this analysis goes on all throughout the therapy process. Early on , we emphasize fully experiencing one's stuttering openly (we call it "clean stuttering") One can not come to modify behaviors he or she is not aware of, and if the emotional reactivity is too high, the individual will find it too difficult to rationally explore options for handling the moment of stuttering. To be able to reduce the tension of a stutter and regain forward moving speech requires one to be able to "hold" that moment without avoidance, struggle, or attempt at immediate escape. Only after a period of identification and desensitization can effective modification happen. At that point, the individual can rationally evaluate the choices that have, and which strategies work best for them.
