Heather, "negative suggestion and flooding" as described by Charles Van Riper in his classic, The Treatment of Stuttering, can be useful at times in helping to break old patterns but I believe such practices are no substitute by themselves for the hard slogging of in vivo systematic desensitization with the creation of hierarchies that he also called for. But that is one of the elements of genuine stuttering therapy that is labour intensive, time intensive and knowledge intensive — more, in my view, than sole practitioners can handle and definitely not found in quickie fixes. (I'm a consumer, not an SLP.) Any thoughts? — Ed Feuer edfeuer@mts.net
