Heather, I have a suggestion that might help the students appreciate the value of in vivo systematic desensitization and hierarchies. It would happen in conjunction with the assignment they get in fluency disorders classes to go out into the streets and stores to do pseudostuttering in order to gain some awareness of what their future stuttering clients face. What usually happens, I'm told, is massive minimization and sabotaging of the assignment, rendering it more or less a farce. That happens, in my view, because the students have not been adequately prepared. Adequately preparing them would involve their participation in their own in vivo systematic desensitization through the creation of structured hierarchies for the pseudostuttering. It would have the benefit of not only helping them do the assignment properly but teaching them how genuine systematic desensitization could help their future clients. Do you agree? — Ed Feuer edfeuer@mts.net
