I recently did a voluntary stuttering assignment for a fluency course in my graduate program, and as a fluent speaker this was extremely difficult. It filled me with anxiety and stress, and I definitely felt fear that I would be rejected by others. I think it is amazing to learn that as a fluent speaker doing voluntary stuttering, we can understand a little bit about why stuttering is so difficult to live with. But, at the same time, that voluntary stuttering is empowering for individuals who stutter because they have control over the situation. Thank you for your insight and for sharing about extreme desensitization--its encouraging to hear that therapy can be fun and powerful for individuals who stutter if they are willing to face challenging & funny situations.
