Hi Pam, I like the Johnson analogy too as it relates to the experience of stuttering. I think the perspective of the speaker is indeed reflected in our definition (e.g., cognitive and emotional reactions, adverse impact on the speaker’s quality of life). To your question, “…what about what a typical adult pws thinks it is defined?”-- I suspect if definitions of stuttering by people who stutter were pooled, there would be many different ones. This is one of the things that makes stuttering so difficult to define. I suppose a speaker-based twist on Bloodstein’s definition (i.e., “Whatever is perceived as stuttering by a reliable observer who has relatively good agreement with others”) could be: Whatever is perceived as stuttering by a reliable stutterer who has relatively good agreement with him/herself… Thanks for posting, Pam!
