Hi Pam - When I think of the Johnson quote, I tend to word it a bit differently... Instead of something like "stuttering is what the speaker does to avoid stuttering," i think of it as "The surface behavior of stuttering is what the speaker does to avoid the underlying feeling of loss of control." That links together the perception that people who stutter might have and the perception that listeners might have, while putting the speaker's experience in the primary position, where I think it belongs...
