Eric and Scott, thank you for your replies. I cannot agree more strongly with you. I have often struggled with the emphasis placed on surface features of stuttering as a measure of success in our journals when presenting evidence of therapy success or when reading a child’s IEP. In clinic I continue to use measures of surface behaviors as a part of a diagnostic session, recognizing that I am only considering approximately 1/8 of the nature of the stuttering problem (if you use the iceberg analogy) and that it is only representative of that moment. Scott your mention of the volatility of stuttering behaviors provides a strong argument to consider before and after testimonials (illustrating dramatic reductions in stuttering) null and void! It is heartening to see more widespread use of measures like the OASES to help get a better picture of the person’s experience of stuttering and how it affects his life in daily activities. Thanks again for your responses and for the excellent article!
