Hi Kathryn. A stutterer does not always "know" when they are going to stutter. Many speakers report, "just talking and not thinking about it." In fact, comments like this are often a sign of success/progress in therapy! I think the critical point, however, is that in the current view speakers can learn to always anticipate (not that you'd necessarily want to) overt features of stuttering (e.g. tension, blocks, etc.) The ability to anticipate is possible because the overt features happen down the stuttering chain, so to speak. Thanks for readig the paper and for posting!
