Hi Nancy. It is indeed challenging to justify services for those kids who are choosing not to talk in class. How many times have we gotten from teachers, "He's fine, he hasn't really been having trouble"--when the kid feels as though he can't talk in class because of stuttering? I agree that the OASES is a great tool precisely for that reason. As far as a "school-friendly" definition, you're right, we need one! What are the key characteristics that we'd want to get across? The fact that stuttering "happens" before its symptoms happen. How stuttering often leads to avoidance, and how stuttering can significantly impact a kid's QOL (even when it's not always noticeable). What else? Input from everybody welcome!
