So, from my perspective, why I try not to stutter: to avoid the helpless feeling I get when I try to say a sound and nothing happens; to avoid the helpless feeling I get when I try to say a sound and it does comes out but dragged and repetitious, like a ragged cough; to avoid the feelings of helplessness and embarrassment when someone listening to me in a block looks confused or startled and then averts their eyes or smirks or tries to suppress a smirk. I try not to stutter so I don't sound like I don't know what I am talking about. I try not to stutter so that I sound like everyone else who is participating in the discussion or presentation. I try not to stutter so that I can quickly move on to my next point or thought - stuttering slows me up. I try not to stutter because it is uncomfortable and I'd rather be comfortable while talking. But I do stutter most of the time and am usually ok with it. It's in high stake situations where I fear judgement that the above scenarios - where I try not to stutter - come into play! ~Pam
