In those cases where the client is unaware of the stuttering I would prefer indirect therapy methods in combination with fluency shaping techniques. When shaping fluency by changing the whole way of speaking to for example prolonged speech and/or slowing speech rate (“speaking as slowly as a snail moves”) you do not have to call the child`s attention to the stuttering moments and would not negatively impact his self-esteem.
