Darci - Interesting question - I am still trying to figure out and define for myself what is different about this therapy situation that makes it effective both in and out of the therapy session. I think the personal relationship is a very strong element. Knowing that he is as invested in me as I am, probably had been much of what has been missing in past therapy relationships. I liken it to my work as a teacher. Some of my least effective days as a teacher are when I am too focused on the lesson objectives ( or the therapeutic techniques and processes as a parallel). My most effective days are when I resist the urge to do what what is neat and tidy and organized, and reach and connect with the child. Then the learning takes care of itself. I think it is kind of like that.
