Reed- What I meant was that at times i felt that " the pain of stuttering is perhaps something that only someone else who stutters can truly understand" I, however, "don't" think that a speech pathologist who doesn't stutter can't have empathy, and relate to the client in terms of human challenges. We all have challenges. I believe if you can connect with your client through relating to their challenge through perhaps your own challenges, it makes a therapist more human, more personable, and strengthens the bond between therapist and client, more than focusing simply on strategies, and making it more clinical feeling. Be real, and share your passion. That'll go far.
