Thank you for your reply, Grant. Firstly, can you point to examples where the professional associations in Australia or North America did pursue legal remedies vigourously, as the lawyers would say? Secondly, to meet the standards of scientific validity which would also stand up in court, independent third-party assessment of long-term outcomes would be crucial. Practitioners evaluating their own work won't cut it for a number of reasons neither in science, nor in the courts. But the independent third-party assessment that I call for does not exist — and I've not seen evidence that the SLP community is too enthusiastic about such a concept. — Ed Feuer edfeuer@mts.net
