As a graduate student who does not stutter, I do not have much experience working with people who do. I am currently in a fluency disorders class though, and have learned about the importance of counseling. I feel like this is an interesting topic to bring up in therapy. From my experience, I can understand why sleep deprivation can increase stuttering. I know my reaction times, thought processes, and comprehension is much slower when I do not get enough sleep at night. However, I would not state that lack of sleep is the cause of stuttering; it influences how severe one stutters at a given time. I think it would be interesting if more research was completed that focused on stuttering relapses and sleep deprivation.
