Hi Kelsey. First, I ask about sleep habits (time to go to bed, time to wake up, insomnia, breathing problems, and so on). I also ask if the client or parents notice that poor sleep worsen stuttering (if they do not, I ask them to observe that for a few weeks). If we conclude there are sleep problems, I counsel the client or the parents about the specific problems that were found. The problems are usually related to sleep hygiene measures. After that, they have to put into practice what was discussed, they have to change habits. Then we must wait some time (a month, for example) to analyze the benefits of the new sleeping patterns on speech fluency. But sometimes it is also necessary to refer the client to a neurologist or to a otorhinolaryngologist (when a surgical procedure is necessary, for example). Sandra
