Hi. Very good question! Sleep must to be continuous for achieving appropriate REM sleep. So, if a child or an adult wakes up several times per night, REM sleep is not successfully achieved. I would suggest several measures, such as: 1) have dinner at least 1 hour before to go to bed, 2) do not ingest stimulant food after 6 p.m. (such as coffee or chocolate), 3) have a regular time to go to bed at night and to wake up in the morning, 4) eliminate naps in the afternoon, 5) see a neurologist to check if sleep hormone (melatonin) would be useful. These strategies would have to be applied for several weeks to see if they work well. Sandra
