I thought your post on sleep deprivation and it’s implications for stuttering rehabilitation was fascinating. When I finished reading, I reflected on my own speech tendencies after a poor night’s sleep, and what I found was very similar to what you had written. I often get “tangled up” in my speech or even have a difficult time attending to a conversation. As a person who does not stutter, it was an eye-opening reflection. If sleep deprivation can have such a significant affect on me, what sort of consequences does it have for a person who does stutter? I know you are not implying that sleep hygiene is the solution to stuttering, but I do think it is something to keep in mind during clinical practice. Encouraging healthy sleeping habits may not only have affects on the person’s speech, but it does encourage a healthier living style. New research like this really encourages me to continue seeing speech as a very complex, interconnected system. I am excited to see what other sort of research links sleep deprivation to stuttering. Thank you for your insightful post.
