Hi Kelly, thanks for the comments and questions. Yes, I found it very hard to share my true feelings about stuttering, with anyone, for years. In fact, I was extremely covert for most of my adult life, until about 6 years ago, when I couldn't take it anymore and decided to come clean and face my denial. I still find it very hard to talk about all the years I wasted, but I have found a lot of power in telling my story and offering a venue for other people who stutter to share their stories. Please check out my blog and podcast(s) if you're interested at www.stutterrockstar.com. My advice to a student SLP - listen to what the client is saying or not saying. Be available to work on feelings and self image before attempting speech tool work. Always take the approach that therapeutic goals need to be determined mutually by the person who stutters and the clinician. Never assume you know more just because you studied speech language pathology. Be open to meeting the client where he or she is at - even if you are feeling compelled to do this or that because its a requirement for class or practicum. Talk with the client, get to know him or her, ask questions, and above all, let the person stutter. ~Pam
