Kevin’s point about fear being a major part of stuttering is a vital piece of this discussion and a part of me believes fighting back could alleviate some of that fear for CWS. However, fighting back is hard and many children do not have the physical or emotional capabilities to aggressively attack a bully. So they are stuck being bullied and believing that it is their fault because they will not fight back. What then? Do we train CWS in martial arts or boxing? If a parent or professional does that with the main purpose being retribution against a bully, then they are legally responsible if anything were to happen in the altercation (check the web for many examples). We need to equip all children with functional tools to deal with bullying as outlined in this paper. Violence typically begets more violence and rarely is the long term answer.
