Hello Jill and Lena; Thanks for the question. As you can read from our article, we feel that there are many ways to address bullying for children who stutter. Each will be a case by case basis. In general, you will know (given the children involved in your case) what the personalities will "hold." Generally, what children who stutter need from SLPs is a safe place to discus the issues, and a person who will allow/guide them to problem solve in a safe and supportive environment. I am not certain that "letting them figure it out for themselves" is the message that is helpful. Even though children, in the end, need to do what resonates with them at the moment, they need adult guidance and support (without adults imposing their will on the situation) to arrive at effective plans for dealing with bullies.
