Hi Lisa - Thanks for your post. You are absolutely right that SLPs need to get more comfortable with stuttering, in all ways. I think if some in our profession understood this condition better, then we would have a lot better chance of providing meaningful and effective treatment that helps children overcome the entire burden of stuttering. Nina and I have written a bit about this in our ISAD paper on school-age kids, and it's something that we've expounded on quite a bit. Put simply, and somewhat bluntly, clinicians who aren't comfortable with stuttering (and who don't understand the condition from the speaker's perspective) shouldn't be treating stuttering. There, I said it and I'm glad ;-). S
