Growing up I was always told by my dad that after talking to the bully, if they didn't stop, I should "handle" the situation so they would stop (handling being a physical/slightly violent method) and my mother was always the advocate for going and talking to the teachers and notifying the adults, like you suggested. However now you hear things about how the bullying can get worse even when the teachers and adults have been notified. I have also heard of schools who don't really take much action to stopping bullies for whatever reason. I guess the best thing to do would be to make sure that all authority figures are notified and to make sure the child being picked on sticks up for themselves and avoids the bully the best they can until the school does something about it.
