Christina; Well....should/do schools have programs.... On the "should" question...this is a tough one. While my heart says "yes" (because I know what teasing can do for kids who stutter), my head says "possibly not" because I don't think "schools" know enough to address the issue specifically. I also don't know that "schools" can address each and every difference that children have as a separate program...My thought would be that a strong anti-bullying program from the top-down in school districts would be the most effective use of resources. Do schools have specific programs for stuttering and bullying? I am not aware of any, specifically. SLPs are the ones who (hopefully) understand the disorder of stuttering and the impact bullying has on their students who stutter. Therefore, our colleagues rely on us to help address this issue on a case by case basis. Thanks for participating and good luck in your future endeavors in our profession!
